I worked on Zombie Boardshop as sole designer. After the initial conversation with the client, we decided that to compete with big snow board and skate board chains we had to develop a strong and recognizable brand presence. We wanted to be cooler then the competition by showing grass roots (as opposed to selling out) and establish strong brand loyalty.
The logo was created as a strong and recognizable symbol while still being legible at distance.
I created the logo as a foundation and then created the rest of the products with grassroots inspiration. I leaned heavily on my illustrative work to accomplish this. I created the mural in a painterly style. This separated the spray can style that the bigger chains have claimed. All fliers and other event materials I used ink and watercolor illustration. Again separating from the competition's Photoshop style materials.
The next step was to create a bunch of swag, paying close attention to what is cool and what is lame. Beer cozies are cool--personalized pens are lame. We worked with the client's staff and customers to keep our finger on this pulse.
I was later hired by the client to produce illustration for several products and campaigns.
All do it yourself projects involving the brand by the customer was embraced and advocated to establish loyalty with this demographic. Examples are self made drawings, stickers, graffiti, signs, murals, and tattoos.
